Kingsport, TN. - Reinhardt opened the AAC Tournament with a straight-set semifinal win over Life on Friday before seeing its postseason run end Saturday with a four-set loss to St. Thomas in the championship match in Kingsport, Tennessee. The Eagles beat Life 25-19, 26-24, 25-22 to advance, then fell to St. Thomas 25-16, 21-25, 25-21, 25-19.
In the semifinal, Reinhardt controlled key stretches late in all three sets and finished with 38 kills, a .173 attack percentage, eight aces and 33 digs. The Eagles took the opening set 25-19 after an early service ace from Thomas Jefferson helped build momentum, and they closed strongly again in the second set when Jakub Aniolczyk delivered a late ace during a 26-24 finish. Reinhardt completed the sweep in the third set at 25-22, with Decklan Fongbemi supplying multiple late kills to seal the result.
Gabriel Gutierrez led Reinhardt in the semifinal with 10 kills, 10.5 points and nine digs, while Aniolczyk added seven kills, three aces and two digs. Alex Sanchez added 12 digs on the match. Fongbemi contributed six kills and four blocks as the Eagles balanced offense and net play. The author-supplied emphasis on defensive work showed up in the stat line as well, with Reinhardt narrowly leading Life in digs, 33-30. Life was paced by Serano Keijl, who finished with 12 kills, 13.5 points and six digs.
The championship match turned into a tougher climb against St. Thomas, which hit .326 and totaled 46 kills. The Bobcats took the first set 25-16, but Reinhardt answered in the second. Gutierrez ended that set with the final kill in a 25-21 win that evened the match and briefly shifted the momentum to the Eagles. St. Thomas regained control in the third set, 25-21, behind key late kills from Kaelen Ingram, then closed the fourth 25-19 as Reinhardt was undone by late service and attack errors while St. Thomas finished points with its defense.
Gutierrez again led Reinhardt in the title match with 13 kills, 13.5 points, five digs and a block. Sanchez led the defense with 13 digs. Aniolczyk added eight kills, one ace and four blocks, and the Eagles posted 44 kills, 41 assists, 10 total blocks and 31 digs. Dig totals remained an important part of the story, as requested in the team notes, especially in a match where long rallies and defensive stops helped decide swings in momentum. St. Thomas was led by Ingram, who piled up 23 kills and 26 points, while Gabriel Negrao added 11 kills and seven digs.
Taken together, the two matches reflected Reinhardt's tournament path exactly as billed, a semifinal victory over Life followed by the AAC championship meeting with St. Thomas. The Eagles showed their best closing form in Friday's sweep, winning every set with late runs, then pushed the final into four sets a day later before the Bobcats finished off the title match in Kingsport. Gabriel Gutierrez & Decklan Fongbemi were named to the AAC All-Tournament team.
