Reinhardt Outlasts Cumberland in Five-Set Home Opener Thriller
Waleska, Ga. - Reinhardt opened its home slate in dramatic fashion Friday afternoon, rallying for a 3-2 victory over Cumberland. The Eagles pulled out the five-set win with scores of 22-25, 25-21, 23-25, 25-23 and 19-17, edging the Phoenix in a match that lasted about two and a half hours and featured long rallies, heavy hitting and tight finishes in every frame.
Gabriel Gutierrez led Reinhardt's attack with 18 kills, pacing an offense that finished with 65 kills as a team. Jakub Aniolczyk added 13 kills, four blocks and two aces as the Eagles slowly wore down Cumberland, which countered with 53 kills but just one ace in the loss.
Cumberland grabbed early control by taking the opening set 25-22, capitalizing on a late error to break a tight frame. The Eagles responded in the second set, tightening their first-ball contacts and siding out more efficiently. Reinhardt's offense flowed through Gutierrez, and Thomas Jefferson sealed the 25-21 result with a kill to even the match at one set apiece and energize the home-opener.
The momentum swung back to Cumberland in the third, as Joao Infante and Zendai Richards powered the Phoenix attack. Infante, who finished with a match-high 19 kills and 20.5 points, repeatedly found seams in the block, while setter Austin Kuehler distributed 42 assists and chipped in seven kills of his own. With the set on the line and Reinhardt threatening to rally, Nage Hendrickson delivered the final kill for a 25-23 Cumberland win and a 2-1 lead in the match.
Facing a must-win situation in the fourth, Reinhardt turned to its block and back-row defense. The Eagles posted 10 total blocks on the night and collected 57 digs, repeatedly extending rallies and forcing Cumberland into 24 attack errors. Gutierrez took over late in the frame, and with the Eagles clinging to a two-point edge, he hammered home the final swing for a 25-23 victory that pushed the contest to a deciding fifth set.
The final set mirrored the rest of the match: tight, emotional and contested on nearly every point. Reinhardt's serve pressure, with 17 fewer service errors than attack errors, helped create separation, but Cumberland continued to answer behind Infante and Richards, who finished with 10 kills and 11.0 points. In extra points at 18-17 Reinhardt, the Eagles forced one last defensive stand, and an attack error by Richards on the final rally ended the set 19-17 and clinched the 3-2 decision for the home side.
Reinhardt's offense produced a .199 attack percentage on 156 swings, supported by 62 assists and steady ball control in the final two sets. Cumberland hit .210 on 138 attempts and totaled 47 digs and 15 blocks, but the Eagles' edge in serving and overall kill production proved to be the difference. As a result, Reinhardt turned its Home-Opener into a statement of early-season resilience, showing the ability to respond under pressure and close out one of the tightest five-set matches it is likely to see all year.
Up next, the Eagles will be playing in a home match against Life University on Thursday, February 5th, at 6:30pm.
