Eagles Golf Places Second at Carey Collegiate; Latimer Finishes Fourth!
Hattiesburg, MS - Reinhardt University's Men's Golf team turned in a strong performance at the Carey Collegiate, finishing second in a 15-team NAIA field at Canebrake Country Club in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, on March 9–10. The Eagles posted a 13-under team total over three rounds on the 6,995-yard, par-72 layout, ending four shots behind tournament champion Webber International, which finished at 17 under.
Freshman Griffin Latimer led Reinhardt with a fourth-place individual finish at 6 under par, pacing a lineup that placed three golfers inside the top 10 and four inside the top 15 in a field of 83 golfers. Latimer opened with back-to-back 3-under rounds before closing with an even-par final round to lock in his top-five showing. Behind him, veterans Zane May and Trey Schmidt each finished tied for eighth at 4 under, while Eli Howren used a late surge to climb to 13th at 2 under.
The Eagles positioned themselves near the top of the leaderboard early thanks to a strong first round. May carded a 4-under opening round that put him among the top three golfers in the tournament after 18 holes. Latimer added a 3-under start of his own, giving Reinhardt two players in red figures and helping the team establish early momentum in the 54-hole event hosted by William Carey University.
Latimer continued his steady play in Round 2 with another 3-under effort, moving to 6-under for the tournament and into contention individually. Schmidt joined the charge with a 3-under second round, sparking a climb of nine spots on the leaderboard by the end of the event. Through 36 holes, Reinhardt's core quartet kept the Eagles firmly in the hunt, setting up a final-day chase of Webber International.
The closing round featured Reinhardt's best individual score of the week when Howren fired a 4-under final round to jump into 13th place overall. Latimer's even-par 72 secured his 6-under total, while May and Schmidt each closed with 3-over rounds to finish at 4 under. Despite the late push, the Eagles were unable to erase Webber International's advantage, ultimately settling for the runner-up spot at 13 under.
Depth also played a role in Reinhardt's finish, with Pride Dyer placing 23rd and MJ Hodge taking 38th to round out the Eagles' contingent. With three top-10 finishers, four golfers under par for the tournament, and a double-digit under-par team score, the performance at Canebrake Country Club added another strong result to Reinhardt's resume as the Eagles head into the heart of their spring schedule.
Next up for the #2 NAIA-ranked Eagles will be another tournament in Mississippi. This time, the Eagles will be in West Point, Mississippi, competing at the BMCU Spring Classic hosted by Blue Mountain University Golf. The tournament will be held at Mossy Oak Golf Club on March 23-24. Including the Blue Mountain Classic, the Eagles have just two tournaments left before the AAC Championship comes up on April 20-21.
