Eagles Finish the St. Thomas Series with 14-10 Loss
Miami Gardens, FL - Eagles Baseball wrapped up their trip to South Florida playing the final game of the four-game series with the #8 ranked Bobcats of St. Thomas. Reinhardt would come up short in this again in this one as it resembled game two of the series where the Eagles had a lead - but could not hold the lead. The final score would go in favor of the Bobcats, 14-10.
Game four would see the Eagles get out to a good 5-0 lead through the top of the third, but in the bottom of the inning - St. Thomas would come roaring back just as they have done in games one and two. The Bobcats have the ability to score a lot of runs in bunches and that is just what they did against the Eagles today. After the Eagles were able to get another run in the top of the fourth, St. Thomas would score another three runs to go up. 8-6 after five.
Jordan Hampton would get the start in this final game and he did start off with some success, but the five runs in the bottom of the third and the three runs in the fourth would put an end to Hampton's day on the mound. Gabriel Sjostrom would come in to replace Hampton and would get the Eagles out of the fourth inning. The fifth inning saw the Eagles hold the Bobcats scoreless by Sjostrom and he would make it to the next before the Bobcats would have another big inning. Sjostrom would give up four runs in the sixth and would be relieved by Michael Reed. Reed would have two runs against him in the same bottom of the sixth. This would give the Bobcats the 14 runs that needed to win the game.
Hal Stellies and Blake Rogers would pitch the last couple of innings for the Eagles and both had pretty good numbers. No runs were scored the rest of the way for the Bobcats, but their damage in the game had already been executed. With the score 14-6 in favor of the Bobcats, the Eagles would add two more runs in the top of the seventh making the score 14-10. The two runs came on two solo shot home runs by Lance Dockery and Richard Castro. Dylan Lewis got the other homerun by the Eagles in game one.
Lockery and Castro both went 2 for 5 in this game and Lewis and Zach Rabe were 2 for 4. Matty Maurer went 2 for 3 in the game with a double and Jacob Profit was able to get a double in the game as well.
The Eagles will have to take this series as a learning experience to see what are the things that they did well and what are some things they need to work on. They showed that they are able to put up runs against an NAIA Top 10 opponent, but they also showed that they need to work on keeping a lead once they have it. Playing tough teams early like this can be rewarding in the end of the season as long as the teams grows from the experience.
Reinhardt will have to put this series behind them quickly as they will have a week/weekend packed with baseball. The Eagles will be hosting the Southeastern Rumble against this season when many top level NAIA baseball teams come in for a "round-robin" style schedule. This Eagles will play single games each afternoon It should be a fun weekend for Eagles Baseball fans to see how they matchup against the competition.
