Complete Game by Herbert in Game Three Brings Life Back to Series
Waleska, GA - Day two of the south Florida series with St. Thomas continued on Friday with a doubleheader. It was another nice day for baseball as the Eagles would try to rebound from their Thursday evening loss. Game one of the day would see tons of runs come across the plate, while game two of the day would see Reinhardt have one of the better pitching days of the early season and early scoring to change things up in the series.
Doubleheader Game One
In the first game of the day, the Eagles seemed like they would turn things around from the loss in game one of the series played last night. After giving up three runs in the first inning, the Eagles settled down and put up two runs in the second and six runs in the third inning. Parker Miller would get the start in this first game and after getting past the first-inning runs, he was able to get a couple of innings of no runs. The first inning of three runs, one run in the fourth, and then one in the fifth would give 6 runs total for Miller. He was able to strike out 5 batters but did give up 11 hits in the game. The Eagles did still have a slight lead in the game when Parker was relieved by Cobey Allison.
Allison was able to help Miller by getting the final out of the fourth inning, but he would immediately run into trouble in the bottom of the fifth where he gave up two home runs. One of the home runs was a grand slam - which inevitably put the game out of reach for the Eagles. Allison was pulled after the second home run and replaced by Landon Perkins. Perkins started out pretty good, but would eventually run into some run trouble in the bottom of the eighth. He had a scoreless seventh inning, but in the eighth Perkins would give up two home runs to add to the Bobcat's total.
The third inning was the big inning for the Eagles' offense as they would score six of their ten runs. Jarrett. Burny would get a double to start off the run-producing inning and he was followed by singles by Lance Dockery and Zach Rabe. Burney's hits were able to bring home Richard Castro and Sam Kilgore, while Dockery brought home, Burney. Zach Rabe hit scored Sam Kilgore and Zach Rabe.
Allison was given the loss in the game after losing the lead in the sixth. Burney and Dawson Johns had doubles in the game and Rabe (2), Burney (2), Dockery, and Shayne Campbell had RBIs in the game.
Ultimately, the grand slam would be the moment the game turned around in favor of the Bobcats and the Eagles would go on to lose 16-10.
Doubleheader Game Two
In the second game of the day, the Eagles would get one back from St. Thomas. They would get all the runs they needed in the first inning but continued to add a few more runs as the game went on for security.
Tucker Zdunich would have one of his first big moments of the 2023 season on a double to center field in the first inning, which scored Jacob Profit. Zdunich would eventually score on a single Richard Castro. After a wild pitch was thrown, Castro would score and then Matty Mauer would double to score Dawson Johns giving the Eagles 4 runs in the first inning.
Andrew Herbert, who had a good game pitching last weekend against Georgetown despite losing, would get the start in the second game and he would get all seven innings in for Coach Burton. It is something that Coach Burton is wanting from all of his starters, which gives the Eagles the best chance to win. If you the pitchers can keep the runs low, the Eagles have plenty of offense to get runs and pick up wins. Herbert had nine strikeouts in his seven innings and only gave up the three runs.
Lance Dockery would pick up one of the runs in the second inning and Dawson Johns got one in the top of the seventh and that was all the Eagles needed to get the first win of the series against the #8 team in the country. The final was 6 to 3 in favor of the Eagles.
Tucker Zdunich, Dawson Johns, and Matty Mauer all got doubles in the game and Zdunich, Castro, Mauer, and Zach Rabe got the RBIs. Jacob Profit, Lance Dockery, Zdunich, and Mauer all had stolen bases for the Eagles.
The teams will be back at it Saturday afternoon for the final game of the series. With a win, the Eagles can split the series after seemingly having some issues in games one and two.
