Lakeland, FL. - On the second and final day of the tournament hosted by Southeastern, the Reinhardt University Volleyball Eagles faced off against the Point University Skyhawks & Southeastern at The Furnace on Saturday, August 16th, 2025. In a gripping five-set struggle, the Eagles narrowly lost to the Skyhawks with a final score of Reinhardt University 2, Point 3 and lost to SEU 3-0.
Game One vs. Point (2-3; 25-10, 24-26, 25-20, 14-25, 13-15):
The Eagles started strong, dominating the first set with a solid 25-10 score. However, the following set saw the Skyhawks dishing out a stiff competition, edging out a tight 26-24 victory. In response, the Eagles pushed back in the third set, capturing it with a score of 25-20, showing promising tactics and teamwork. But the momentum shifted in the fourth set as Point University made a comeback, winning decisively at 25-14. The deciding fifth set was a tense affair, with the Skyhawks clinching the match by a slender 15-13 margin.
Throughout the match, standout performances came from Juliette Baffico who secured 15 kills, Jenna Smith with 10 kills, and Breah Watson contributing 9 kills and defensively adding 2 blocks. Giulia Julve tied Watson with 2 blocks. Notably, the defensive efforts were also commendable with Silvia Aguado leading the team with 31 digs. Ashlynn Barnes not only supported defensively with 13 digs but also significantly contributed to the offense with 43 assists, accompanied by 2 aces.
Game Two vs. Southeastern (0-3; 15-25, 16-25, 13-25):
The Eagles fell to the Southeastern Fire with a final score of 0-3. This loss brings the Eagles' season record to a current standing of 1-3.
During the initial set, Southeastern demonstrated strong offensive plays, outscoring Reinhardt 25-15. The Eagles strived to gain ground but were unable to match the intensity of the Fire, who maintained a 10-point lead by the set's conclusion. Despite efforts from Zoe Van Waaijen and Jenna Smith, who both scored 7 kills, the Eagles could not overturn the Fire's early dominance.
The second set mirrored the first, with Southeastern again clinching the set by a 25-16 margin. Reinhardt's players, including Juliette Baffico who had significant contributions with 6 kills and 2 blocks in the match, sought to counter the offensive barrage but found themselves trailing throughout the set.
In the decisive third set, Southeastern sealed their victory as they surged to a 25-13 win, completing the sweep against the Eagles. Reinhardt's defensive efforts, highlighted by Silvia Aguado with 9 digs and contributing 1 ace, and Breah Watson along with Lacey Smith each adding 2 blocks, showcased resilience but were not enough to deter the Fire's aggressive play.
Playmakers like Ashlynn Barnes stood out for Reinhardt as well, delivering 14 assists and securing 4 digs and 1 ace.
Up next, the Eagles will be playing in another play-day tournament held at Life University. Day one is set for Friday, Aug. 22nd, against Florida College at 3pm & then will play Life University at 5pm. Then the following day, RU will match up against Webber at 1pm & Warner at 3pm.
