WALESKA, Ga. – Reinhardt softball's 14-game win streak came to an end Sunday as it split the doubleheader with conference foe Milligan (Tenn.), 1-1.
The one win and one loss gave the nation's eighth-ranked team a 25-5 overall record and a 9-1 mark in Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) play.
Game one was the first loss in the AAC for the Eagles as they fell by a score of 8-5. In game two, Reinhardt got back on track with a 4-1 win over the visiting Buffalos.
The AAC loss drops the hometown team to second in the conference behind No. 24 Truett McConnell (Ga.), who is 15-5 overall and a perfect 8-0 in league play.
"We were far from our best today and Milligan played good ball," lead Eagle Jade Geuther said. "We have to play better moving forward."
Game 1, L (8-5)
· Two different Eagles took the mound in game one for Reinhardt – Reagan Radke (3.1 IP, 3 SO, 6 ER) and Ansley Byers (3.2 IP, 1 SO, 1 ER).
· The Buffalos got the scoring going early as they put up two runs in the top half of the first inning.
· Reinhardt did not get its first runs of the game until the bottom of the second inning – the only inning in which they scored – after they secured two hits from Megan Huss and Emily Loveless along with two Milligan miscues; leading to five runs and a 5-2 lead after two.
· Milligan cut that lead to only two runs after they added another run in the top of the third.
· In the top of the fourth, the Buffalos added four more tallies and then one more in the top of the fifth to give them a three-run lead after five innings.
· Reinhardt's strong second inning would not be enough as it could not get anything else going the rest of the way and fell in game one by a score of 8-5.
· Alise Hooks and Emma Adams each had two hits in the first game, while Loveless, Huss and Kalyn Jinks added one apiece.
Game 2, W (4-1)
· Lindsey Shepherd went to the circle in game two for the Eagles and pitched a full seven innings with two strikeouts, only two walks and one earned run.
· Reinhardt again got all of its runs in one inning – this time in the bottom of the first – after hits from Jill Martinet, Emma Adams, Ashlyn Wilkes and Natalie Parlato led to four runs and a 4-0 lead after one.
· Milligan then came out in the top half of the second and put up one run itself to cut the Eagle lead to three.
· The two teams would then leave a combined 11 runners on base the rest of the way and neither would score another run, giving Reinhardt the 4-1 victory.
· Adams had a phenomenal game two by hitting 3-for-3 to make her 5-for-6 on the day with two runs, one RBI and a walk.
· Martinet and Wilkes each had a nice outing in game two as well, where they both went 2-for-3.
Reinhardt will be back in action at Ken White Softball Field for a doubleheader with Columbia International (S.C.) on March 23.
First pitch of game one is set for 4 p.m.
The Rams are 11-14 on the year with a 6-4 AAC record.
