KINGSPORT, Tenn. – Dominant defense and another stellar performance on the offensive end – especially in the third quarter once again – helped women's basketball fly away from IU-East (Ind.), 80-64, Sunday evening at the Show in Kingsport after opening up a 30-point lead after three quarters of play.
With the win, the Eagles stay perfect on the year at 9-0, as Catherine Shope remained on fire for Reinhardt with a high of 25 points and nine rebounds on 10-of-19 shooting in just 19 minutes of action.
Bethany Headrick was the lone additional player in double figures with 15 in the first meeting between the two programs in history.
Reinhardt connected on 44.3 percent of its shots in the triumph (31-for-70) and made five treys, but its defensive effort – 33 Red Wolves turnovers – which resulted in 31 points-off-miscues and helped get the Eagles' lead to as big as 37 tallies late in the third period.
The hometown club also earned 17 assists and 11 steals in the outing. Symone Williams had five dimes and two thefts.
The big cushion allowed for a lot of players to get into the game, with all but two netting at least a single point.
Overall, Reinhardt scored 23-plus points in both the first and third periods, while suffocating IU-East from start to finish, including surrendering just eight tallies in the second stanza.
With the holiday trip now in the books, the club looks ahead to more Appalachian Athletic Conference action against Allen (S.C.) back at the Brown Athletic Center on Wednesday night at 5:30 p.m.
