WALESKA, Ga. -- Betsy Lawson, a 5-foot-9 utility player from Woodstock, Ga., has signed a letter of intent to attend Reinhardt University in the fall and play softball for the Lady Eagles in 2011 under head coach Glen Crawford, the 2010 Appalachian Athletic Conference Coach of the Year. Lawson comes to Reinhardt as a transfer from Berry College and has three years of athletic eligibility remaining. She is a 2009 graduate of Woodstock High School, where she played for head coaches Kortney Dempsey and Tonya Sebring.
"Betsy is a solid player," Crawford said. "She hits the ball really well and is a very good defensive player as well."
Lawson, the daughter of Ken and Dianne Lawson, started all 38 games for Berry last season under head coach Cori Thiermann. Lawson led the Lady Vikings in at-bats (125), runs scored (35), home runs (six), triples (four), total bases (76), slugging percentage (.697) and walks (11) in 2010 while putting together a .367 batting average. As an honor student at Woodstock, she earned three varsity letters in softball and two in track. In softball, she received both all-county and all-region honors on two occasions, including first team all-region accolades as a senior in 2008 and first team all-county recognition in 2007. As a senior, Lawson was selected as a member of the Georgia Dugout Club Elite 80 list. In her sophomore campaign, she led WHS to the 2006 Class AAAAA state championship by being named the Top Offensive Player of the state playoffs.
"There is more competition here at Reinhardt and it's a little closer to home," Lawson said of her transfer from Berry. "I like the Reinhardt campus and how everything is close together. I'm excited."
