KINGSPORT, Tenn. -- On Monday afternoon at the Appalachian Athletic Conference Championship tournament, the No. 5-seed Reinhardt College baseball team posted a 5-2 victory over No. 8-seed Montreat College, eliminating the Cavaliers from the double-elimination event. The nine-team tournament is being played at Hunter-Wright Stadium with the winner claiming the AAC's automatic bid to the NAIA National Championship tournament.
Montreat got out to a 2-0 lead with a single run in each of the first two innings before Reinhardt scored once in the second and twice in the third to take a 3-2 advantage. The Eagles tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Reinhardt outhit the Cavaliers 9-6. The Eagles stranded nine base runners and Montreat seven. Defensively, the Cavaliers committed two errors while the winners played error-free.
Brent Martin was 2-for-4 with two RBIs for Reinhardt while Billy King ended 2-for-4 with a double, a walk and a run scored. Cory Cox (double, sacrifice hit), Brad Blalock (walk, two runs scored) and Blaine Martin (run scored) each went 1-for-3 while Michael Willis singled and knocked in a pair of runs. Jeremy Roberts chipped in with a single while Michael Lonati was hit by a pitch and scored a run.
Matt Dalton was the starting and winning pitcher for the Eagles, going seven innings. He gave up five hits and two runs with five strikeouts and three walks. Ben Gonglach earned a save by allowing just one hit, no runs and no walks with a strikeout over the final two innings.
Reinhardt improves to 27-23 overall while Montreat concludes its 2010 season at 17-32. The Eagles take on the fourth-seeded Milligan College Buffaloes in tournament play on Tuesday. The elimination game is set for 11 a.m. in Kingsport.
