WALESKA, Ga. – The No. 4-seed Reinhardt College men’s soccer team advanced to the semifinal round of the Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament with a 3-0 first-round win over No. 5-seed Southern Wesleyan University on Tuesday afternoon at the Jim & Syble Boring Sports Complex. It was Reinhardt’s second shutout victory in the past four days over the Warriors, who finish their season at 9-7-2 overall.

The Eagles, 10-6 overall, will now travel to take on top-seed Berry College – ranked No. 7 nationally in the NAIA – on its home field in Mount Berry, Ga. Friday’s semifinal match is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.

“We played Berry 2-1, a very close game, so we’re excited to give them another run,” Reinhardt Head Coach Dan Farnham said.

Against Southern Wesleyan, Spencer Davidson (Tucker, Ga.) began the scoring with a goal in the 11th minute off an assist from freshman goalkeeper Corey Grimes, giving the hosts an early 1-0 lead. Freshman Philip Overby (Woodstock, Ga.) made the score 2-0 with a goal in the 53rd minute while freshman Sam Muza (Woodstock, Ga.) was credited with an assist. Padraig McDonagh (Drogheda, Ireland) capped the scoring with a goal in the 89th minute.

“I think we’re peaking, hopefully,” Farnham said. “We’re taking care of business in all areas of the field. The defense played outstanding today, from our goalkeeper to our sweeper David Wilson to our marking backs John Hackett and Stephen Semasky. On the other end of it, our guys are scoring goals. They’re creating chances and putting the ball in the back of the net. They’re being unselfish about it and goals are being spread around among our attacking players. And then in our midfield, senior captain Neil Skinner played another outstanding game for us.”
