CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- On Friday, the Reinhardt College men's and women's tennis teams concluded their 2010 seasons at their respective Appalachian Athletic Conference Championships. The No. 4-seed Reinhardt men's squad beat the fifth-seeded University of Virginia's College at Wise Highland Cavaliers 6-1, advancing to the tournament's semifinal round, before being eliminated with a 5-0 loss to the top-seeded Union College (Ky.) Bulldogs, ranked 13th nationally in the NAIA. The No. 5-seeded Lady Eagles dropped a 5-3 decision to the fourth-seeded Union Lady Bulldogs in the opening round of the women's event. The single-elimination tournaments are being held at the Champions Club.
In Reinhardt's win over UVA-Wise, the Eagles got doubles victories from freshman Justin Wagner and Tyler Winters at No. 1 and freshman Dillon Southerland and Nahum Vigo-Fas at No. 2, both by scores of 8-4. In singles play, Reinhardt won four matches, including Wagner in the top position (6-1, 6-1), Southerland at No. 3 (6-1, 6-0), Vigo-Fas at No. 4 (6-1, 6-0) and Pierce Drake at No. 6 (6-1, 6-3).
The Lady Eagles played a close match but fell just short of moving into the semifinals. In the setback against Union, Reinhardt sisters Kayla Spivey and Kristie Spivey posted a 9-8 victory in the No. 1 doubles spot. Kristie Spivey came back to record a 6-4, 6-3 triumph at No. 2 singles while the Lady Eagles' other winner in the one-on-one competitions was freshman Lauren Long at No. 3 (6-1, 6-0).
The Reinhardt men's team finishes its 2010 campaign with a 4-8 overall record and ended in fifth place during the AAC regular season with a 2-4 mark. The Lady Eagles conclude their season at 1-9 overall and were 1-5 in the conference for sixth place.
