PINEVILLE, Ky. -- Behind medalist Zach Lindsey, a freshman, the Reinhardt College men's golf squad captured the tournament championship by 33 shots with a 587 (+11) total at the Bulldog Invitational, hosted by Union College (Ky.). The two-day, 36-hole event was held at the par-72, 7026-yard Wasioto Winds Golf Club on Monday and Tuesday with three teams taking part.
Reinhardt, which received one vote in the latest NAIA poll to rank tied for 44th nationally, fired an opening-round 291 to grab a 13-stroke lead on Monday over the host Union Bulldogs. On Tuesday, the Eagles finished with 296, 15 shots better than the Campbellsville University Tigers. Campbellsville was the tournament runner-up at 620, followed by Union at 623.
Reinhardt's Lindsey earned his first-place finish by being the only player among 21 to shoot under par both days. He posted a 4-under-par 140 with rounds of 71 on Monday and 69 on the final day, one stroke ahead of teammate Chris Cartwright, the runner-up who fired 67-74--141. Freshman Dan Merriman toured the course in 76-77--153 for fifth place while Justin Osborne and Jason Mobley also contributed to the Eagles' victory.
On the women's side, Reinhardt's lone participant in the 16-player field was Megan Lane. She shot 99-90--189 for 14th place. Union won the women's title with 358-343-701, beating the Montreat College Lady Cavaliers (352-353--705) and Tennessee Wesleyan College Lady Bulldogs (350-357--707).
The Eagles play 54 holes next Monday and Tuesday in the Appalachian Athletic Conference Championship at Bear Trace at Tims Ford in Winchester, Tenn. The AAC Championship for the women is on Monday and Tuesday, April 26-27 at the Fairfield Glade Resort in Fairfield Glade, Tenn.
