WALESKA, Ga. -- On Monday in an Appalachian Athletic Conference doubleheader against the visiting Bryan College Lions, the Reinhardt College baseball team won the first game 10-8 but lost the second 4-3 in nine innings at Ken White Baseball Field.  

In the back-and-forth opener, Bryan scored a run in each of the first two innings before Reinhardt tied the contest with two runs in the bottom of the second. The Lions tallied another run in the third inning, taking a 3-2 lead, but the Eagles responded by scoring twice in the home half of the third and once in the fourth. In the fifth inning, the guests regained the advantage, 6-5, with three runs before Reinhardt came right back by scoring four times in the bottom half. Bryan pulled to within 9-8 with a pair of runs in the sixth inning and the hosts concluded the scoring with a run in the bottom of the sixth.

The Lions outhit the Eagles 10-8 and there were 11 stolen bases in the game, six by Bryan and five by Reinhardt. The Eagles made three of the game's four errors.

Brent Martin led the Reinhardt offense by going 3-for-3 with a walk, two RBIs and a run scored while Joe Niehoff finished 1-for-1 with two runs scored. Jeremy Roberts went 1-for-2 with a walk, two stolen bases, an RBI and a run scored while Brad Blalock doubled and drove in three runs. Michael Willis had a hit, walked and scored twice while Ethan Starr also singled and collected two runs scored.

For the Eagles, Matt Dalton was the starting pitcher and went four innings, giving up two earned runs with seven strikeouts and two walks. Josh Wilson got the win after working one inning and allowing no earned runs with one strikeout and no walks. Ryan McDowell earned a save by throwing the final two innings.

Reinhardt led 1-0 in the second game before the Lions tied the score in the top of the second inning. The Eagles went back on top 2-1 by scoring once in the fourth inning but Bryan came up with two runs in the fifth. Reinhardt sent the contest into extra innings with a run in the sixth inning but the visitors were able to come away with the victory after pushing across a run in the ninth.

The Lions ended with a slim 9-8 edge in hits. The Eagles stranded 12 base runners and Bryan nine. The Lions were guilty of four errors while Reinhardt played error-free.

At the plate for the Eagles, Willis went 2-for-5 with two doubles while Billy King finished 1-for-1 with an RBI and a run scored. Roberts was 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI while Martin also had a hit in three at-bats, plus drew a pair of bases on balls. Niehoff, Mike Smothers (RBI) and Starr (run scored) each singled.

On the mound, Drew Tyson started and pitched 4 1/3 innings for Reinhardt, recording nine strikeouts with two walks. Matt Barger was tagged with the loss after 4 2/3 innings of work in which he surrendered three hits and one run with six strikeouts and two walks.

The Eagles are 8-10 overall and 1-4 in the AAC while Bryan is 12-11 overall, including 4-1 in conference play. The teams are slated to conclude their three-game series on Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Waleska.
