WALESKA, Ga. -- In a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday, the Reinhardt College baseball team split two non-conference games with the visiting Shorter College Hawks at Ken White Baseball Field. Reinhardt won the opener 4-3 but lost the second contest 18-9.
In the second inning of game one, Shorter scored once in the top half before the Eagles went ahead with three runs in the bottom. Reinhardt increased its lead to 4-1 with a run in the fourth inning before the Hawks concluded the scoring with two runs in the sixth.
The winners had an 8-7 edge in hits, left nine runners on base and committed two errors. Shorter stranded seven base runners and played error-free defensively.
Mike Smothers led the way for the Eagles by going 3-for-3 with a double, a walk and an RBI while Jeremy Roberts went 2-for-3 with a home run and a walk. Brent Martin was 2-for-3 with a run scored while freshman Will Foster finished with a hit and an RBI.
On the mound for Reinhardt, Ben Gonglach started and went 6 2/3 innings for the win. He allowed two earned runs before giving way to Michael Willis, who recorded the final out for a save.
With four runs in the first inning, three in the third and two in the fourth, the Hawks built a 9-0 advantage in the second game. The hosts scored three times in the bottom of the fourth but a wild fifth inning followed in which Shorter tallied seven runs and the Eagles six, making the score 16-9. The guests tacked on a single run in each of the sixth and seventh innings.
The Hawks outhit Reinhardt 20-5 and made one error to the Eagles' five, which led to 10 unearned runs. Shorter left 12 runners on base and Reinhardt seven.
For the Eagles, Brad Blalock came off the bench with a pinch-hit grand slam while Bryan Jackson provided a three-run home run in a pinch-hitting role. Brent Martin ended 1-for-2 with a pair of walks, two runs scored and an RBI while Willis doubled and scored. Joe Niehoff also stroked a double while Roberts and Brett Flick each drew two bases on balls and scored once. Blaine Martin earned a walk, an RBI and a run scored while Smothers also came around to score.
Josh Wilson was Reinhardt's starting pitcher and took the loss after surrendering three earned runs with two strikeouts and no walks over three innings. The Eagles used four pitchers out of the bullpen.
Reinhardt is 7-9 overall while the Hawks are 9-12. The Eagles' game with the NCAA Division III Bridgewater College Eagles, scheduled for Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Piedmont College in Demorest, Ga., has been canceled. Reinhardt is slated to host an Appalachian Athletic Conference contest with the Bryan College Lions on Friday at 6 p.m.
