MOBILE, Ala. -- At the University of Mobile Classic on Saturday, the Reinhardt College softball team won two more games, improving to 14-2 overall, the best start in the six-year history of the program. Reinhardt hammered the Dillard University Bleu Devils 13-0 before defeating the host Mobile Lady Rams, ranked No. 18 nationally in the NAIA, by the score of 2-1 in 10 innings. It was the Lady Eagles' second win over Mobile this season.
Reinhardt started fast against Dillard, scoring eight times in the bottom of the first inning. The Lady Eagles added three runs in the second inning and scored once in each of the third and fourth as the contest ended in the middle of the fifth due to the eight-run mercy rule.
The winners outhit the Bleu Devils 17-1. Dillard made five errors, leading to nine unearned runs, while Reinhardt did not commit an error.
Offensively for the Lady Eagles, Bailey Arnaud finished 4-for-4 with a double, three runs scored and two RBIs while Kelsey Floyd was 2-for-3 with a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored. Brandie Delay went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored while Sarah Brown ended 2-for-3 with a run scored. Other contributors included Andrea Thibaudeau (2-for-4, double, RBI, run scored), freshman Kimber Beard (2-for-4, RBI), Ashley Kennedy (1-for-1, RBI, run scored), Cali Lovett (single, two runs scored) and Lauren Eide (single, run scored).
Floyd pitched the first two innings for Reinhardt and was credited with the victory. She did not allow a hit or a walk while striking out two. Beard worked the final three innings for a save, giving up one hit with five strikeouts and one walk.
In the extra-innings affair with the Lady Rams, Mobile scored once in the bottom of the first inning before the Lady Eagles tied the game with a run in the seventh, sending it into extra innings in which the international tie-breaker rule was used. Reinhardt produced the game-winning run in the top of the 10th inning on an RBI single from Brown.
Each team collected five hits and was guilty of one error. UM stranded 12 base runners and the Lady Eagles seven.
Haley Williams paced Reinhardt by going 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and a run scored. Floyd had a single, an RBI and a run scored while Alex Riccardi chipped in with a hit.
Riccardi started in the circle for the Lady Eagles and pitched two innings, allowing one run with a strikeout and no walks. Freshman Maddie Monroe threw eight outstanding innings in relief in earning the win. She surrendered just one hit and no runs with 10 strikeouts and one walk.
The Lady Bleu Devils are 0-9 overall and Mobile is 11-6. Reinhardt plays two more tournament games in Mobile on Sunday, taking on Lindsey Wilson College at 9 a.m. Central time (10 a.m. Eastern) and William Carey University, ranked sixth nationally in the NAIA, at 1 p.m. Central (2 p.m. Eastern).
