BARBOURVILLE, Ky. -- In the semifinal round of the Appalachian Athletic Conference Tournament on Friday night, the No. 6-seed Reinhardt College men's basketball team hung tough until the end before concluding its 2009-10 season with a 70-67 road loss to the second-seeded and AAC regular season co-champion Union College Bulldogs inside Robsion Arena.
Reinhardt raced out to an 11-4 lead before Union came back to take a 35-17 advantage. After the Bulldogs led 43-28 at halftime, the Eagles roared back to take their first and only lead of the second half, 60-59, with 4:40 left. The hosts held the advantage down the stretch but Reinhardt cut the deficit to 69-67 on a three-pointer in the finals seconds, but wound up falling just short.
The guests shot 38.7 percent (24-of-62) from the field while Union finished at 41.7 percent (25-of-60). From the free throw line, the Bulldogs were 19-of-26 (73.1 percent), compared to 15-of-23 (65.2 percent) for the Eagles. Reinhardt outrebounded Union 46-36.
Second Team All-AAC pick Will Lewis posted game highs of 23 points, 15 rebounds and two blocked shots for the Eagles while Kordel Alexander, a third team all-conference selection, scored eight points. Joseph Odugbela contributed seven points, six boards and a game-best three steals off the bench while Quinton Spivey had seven points and five rebounds.
Reinhardt ends its 2009-10 season at 17-12 overall while the Bulldogs advance to the championship game of the AAC Tournament on Monday evening.
