KINGSPORT, Tenn. -- The Reinhardt College men's golf team participated in the Virginia Intermont Fall Invitational on Monday and Tuesday, and again the Eagles were led by freshman Zach Lindsey, who earned medalist honors as the top individual scorer at the third straight tournament. Reinhardt finished in fourth place among nine squads with Appalachian Athletic Conference member Virginia Intermont College hosting the event at the par-71, 6704-yard Cattails at Meadow View Golf Club.
All eight AAC teams competed in the tournament. West Virginia Institute of Technology was the lone squad from outside the conference.
On Monday, the Eagles shot 306 and stood in fifth place, 13 shots off the lead. Reinhardt improved to 303 the second day for a 609 total, moving up to fourth. Tennessee Wesleyan College captured the tournament championship with 293-299--592, followed by Milligan College at 293-301--594 and Union College at 300-307--607. Finishing behind the Eagles were host Virginia Intermont (301-321--622), West Virginia Tech (313-320--633), Montreat College (323-312--635), Bluefield College (324-339--663) and the University of Virginia's College at Wise (332-344--676).
In just his third collegiate tournament, Lindsey shot 73 and was tied for sixth place after Monday's round. On Tuesday, Lindsey recorded the day's best score, 71, to end at 2-over-par 144, which was good for a one-stroke victory in the 44-player field. Freshman Dan Merriman fired 76-75-151 to tie for 11th place for Reinhardt while Jason Mobley tied for 19th with 78-76-154. Chris Cartwright and Rudi Lee also competed for the Eagles.
Reinhardt will play in the Chick-fil-A Invitational, hosted by Berry College, on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 5-6 at Coosa Country Club in Rome, Ga.
