BREVARD, N.C. -- On Monday and Tuesday, the Reinhardt College men's golf team took part in the Montreat College Fall Invitational at the par-72, 6548-yard Glen Cannon Country Club. Reinhardt ended in third place among eight teams behind freshman Zach Lindsey, who was crowned as the tournament's medalist.
The Eagles fired a 295 the first day and trailed leader Union College (Ky.) by just one stroke. On Tuesday, Reinhardt dipped to 304 for a 599 total, falling into third place. NCAA Division II Brevard College came from behind to win the event with 593 (300-293), followed by Union at 294-303--597. Teams finishing behind the Eagles included Appalachian Athletic Conference members Virginia Intermont College (fifth, 303-312--615), host Montreat (sixth, 322-313--635), the University of Virginia's College at Wise (seventh, 334-333--667) and Bluefield College (eighth, 344-332--676).
In just his second collegiate tournament, Lindsey captured medalist honors for the second time. He fired a 71 on both Monday and Tuesday, ending at 2-under-par 142 and with a two-shot victory. Reinhardt's Chris Cartwright (73-76) and Rudi Lee (76-73) tied for ninth place at 149 while freshman Dan Merriman shot 76-84--160 to tie for 22nd in the 43-player field. Jason Mobley added 75-86--161, tying for 25th.
The Lady Eagles' lone participant was Megan Lane. She fired 92-92--188 to finish in seventh place among 18 golfers on the women's par-72, 6000-yard layout. Union claimed the women's championship with 365-350--715, followed by Montreat at 374-365--739 and Brevard (379-365--744).
The Eagles will play in the Appalachian Athletic Conference Fall Tournament on Sept. 28-29. The event will be held at Cattails at Meadow View Golf Club in Kingsport, Tenn. Lane will next represent the Reinhardt women at the At Chick-fil-A Invitational, hosted by Berry College, on Oct. 5-6 at Coosa Country Club in Rome, Ga.
