PINEVILLE, Ky. -- The Reinhardt College men's golf team got off to a great start by winning the tournament championship at its first event of the 2009-10 season on Tuesday. Reinhardt finished with a 16-shot victory at the two-day, 36-hole Union Bulldog Fall Invitational, hosted by Union College at the par-72, 7026-yard Wasioto Winds Golf Course.
The Eagles shot 313 and led by eight strokes after Monday's round before firing a tournament-best 300 on Tuesday for a 613 total. Finishing behind Reinhardt were tournament host and Appalachian Athletic Conference member Union (321-308--629), Covenant College (324-30--631), AAC foe Montreat College (332-31--649) and another squad from Union (330-322--652).
Chris Cartwright and freshman Zach Lindsey led the way for the Eagles by finishing as the co-medalists with 4-over-par 148 totals. Cartwright shot 76-72 while Lindsey, playing in his first-ever collegiate event, had the best round of the day on Monday with 75 and followed it up with 73. Rudi Lee (84-77) and Jason Mobley (83-78) each shot 161 to tie for 11th place in the 26-player field while Joe Liptak ended with 79-83--162 to tie for 13th.
Reinhardt's lone entrant in the women's 26-player field was Megan Lane. She fired 100-93--193 to finish in 12th place. Union claimed the women's title with 358-352--710, beating Brescia (385-356--741), Montreat (378-369--747) and another team from Union (508-489--997).
Members of Reinhardt's men's and women's teams will next compete in the Montreat College Fall Invitational on Sept. 14-15 at Glen Cannon Country Club in Brevard, N.C.
