COLUMBUS, Ga. -- The Reinhardt College baseball team, the No. 6 seed, had its 2009 season end on Friday afternoon with a 14-4 loss in the Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament to the top-seeded Berry College Vikings, ranked fourth nationally in the NAIA. The eight-team, double-elimination tournament is being played at the Golden Park Complex.
Berry took a 9-0 lead with two runs in the second inning, three in the fifth and four in the sixth before Reinhardt scored four times in the top of the seventh. The Vikings answered by scoring twice in the bottom of the seventh inning and three runs in the eighth.
Berry outhit the Eagles 20-9. Reinhardt left 15 runners on base and did not commit an error while the Vikings stranded nine base runners and made three errors.
Brett Flick went 2-for-3 with a walk, hit-by-pitch and an RBI for the Eagles while freshman Michael Lonati was 1-for-2, being hit by two pitches and walking once. Michael Willis doubled, drew two bases on balls, drove in a run and scored another while Robby Hearn singled, walked, scored and collected an RBI. Brad Blalock had a single and walk while Jeremy Roberts also singled and was pitch by a pitch. Other contributors included Daniel Hester (double), Jarrod Willis (single, run scored), Bryan Cash (RBI) and Wes Acee (run scored).
Matt Dalton suffered the loss for Reinhardt after starting and pitching 5⅓ innings. Seeing action out of the bullpen were Drew Tyson, Ricky Johnson, Ben Gonglach, freshman Cory Cox and Matt Carter.
The Eagles finish the campaign with a 29-23 overall record while Berry advances at 40-13. Reinhardt posted the best winning percentage (.558) in the five-year history of the program in 2009, and the 29 victories ties the most in a single season.
