LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- In a solid effort down the stretch, the Reinhardt College men's basketball team finished on a 12-0 run over the final three-plus minutes of the game en route to a 60-54 non-conference win over the Covenant College Scots on Saturday night at Barnes Physical Education Center.
"Down the stretch, our execution was good and that's what helped us win the game," Reinhardt head coach Jeffrey Pourchier said. "We ran some plays and got two easy layups."
In a back-and-forth first half, Reinhardt trailed 18-13 before going on an 8-2 spurt to take the lead. Down 29-25 at halftime, the Eagles raced out to a 37-31 advantage with a 12-2 run over the first four minutes of the second half. The hosts fought back to claim a 54-48 lead before Reinhardt held the Scots scoreless the rest of the way.
"To start the second half, Vonte Samuel played really well," Pourchier said. "He got us going by hitting two early threes."
The Eagles shot 33.9 percent (21-of-62) from the field, including just 12.5 percent (2-of-16) from three-point range, while Covenant finished at 36.7 percent (18-of-49), including 25.0 percent (4-of-16) from three-point territory. Reinhardt made 16-of-24 free throws (66.7 percent) while the Scots were 14-of-27 (51.9 percent). The Eagles outrebounded Covenant 47-38.
Shawn Davis had 16 points and six rebounds off the bench for the winners while Andreaus Thomas ended with 10 points and three assists. Mario Mason chipped in with nine points and seven boards.
Reinhardt evens its overall record at 2-2 on the season while the Scots fall to 0-5. The Eagles will play their first home game of the season, which is also their Southern States Athletic Conference opener, on Tuesday against the Southern Wesleyan University Warriors. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m., following the women's contest between Southern Wesleyan and Reinhardt at 6 p.m.
