WALESKA, Ga. – On a sunny Saturday afternoon at the Jim & Syble Boring Sports Complex, the Reinhardt College baseball team lost both ends of a home Southern States Athletic Conference doubleheader to the Lee University Flames, who are ranked No. 2 nationally in the NAIA. Lee extended its current winning streak to 31 games by taking the first game 10-5 and the second 3-1.
In the opener, Reinhardt led 2-0 after three innings before the Flames scored four runs in the fourth, two in the fifth and four more in the sixth, opening up a 10-2 lead. The Eagles concluded the scoring with three runs in the seventh inning, but it was not enough.
Lee collected 11 hits and made one error. Reinhardt had eight hits and committed three errors.
Offensively for the Eagles, Jarrod Willis (Douglasville, Ga.) went 2-for-3 with a double, hit-by-pitch, two RBIs and a run scored while Greg Ihlenburg (Canton, Ga.) finished 2-for-4 with a double and pair of RBIs. James Greer (Woodstock, Ga.) stroked a pinch-hit double in his only at-bat and later scored a run while Chad Hiddleson (Marietta, Ga.) was 1-for-2 with a walk and run scored. Freshman Harry Nutter (Jonesboro, Ga.) doubled, scored twice and drove in a run while Michael Willis (Douglasville, Ga.) added a hit.
Freshman Drew Tyson (Woodstock, Ga.) was Reinhardt’s starting pitcher and absorbed the loss. In 3⅓ innings, he allowed four hits and three earned runs with three strikeouts and two walks.
In the second contest, the guests scored once in the third inning and twice in the fourth before the Eagles avoided the shutout with a run in the seventh.
Reinhardt was outhit 10-4. The Flames were guilty of three errors and the Eagles one.
Jay Proffit (Marietta, Ga.) led Reinhardt at the plate by going 2-for-2 with a sacrifice bunt and run scored. Greer again went 1-for-1 as a pinch hitter while Jarrod Willis chipped in with a hit.
On the mound for the Eagles, Matt Dalton (Suwanee, Ga.) started and took the loss. He gave up six hits and two earned runs in four innings, striking out one batter and walking one.
Reinhardt falls to 18-16 overall and 5-10 in the SSAC while Lee is 34-1 overall, including 15-0 in conference play. The Eagles are slated to play a non-conference game at Martin Methodist College in Pulaski, Tenn., on Tuesday at 3 p.m. Central time (4 p.m. Eastern).
