CARROLLTON, Ga. – In a non-conference road game at NCAA Division II University of West Georgia on Tuesday afternoon, the Reinhardt College baseball team defeated the Wolves 16-13 at Cole Field. Reinhardt’s victory marked career win No. 250 for Head Coach Bill Popp, who is in his fourth season with the Eagles after spending several years at NCAA Division III Oglethorpe University.
Reinhardt fell behind 7-0 after one inning but rallied to tie the contest with six runs in the second and another in the third. The Eagles earned the lead with three runs in the top of the fourth inning but West Georgia came back with two in the bottom half, making the score 10-9. A four-run fifth inning by Reinhardt gave the guests a 14-9 advantage before the Wolves scored once in the bottom. The Eagles added to their lead with a run in the top of the eighth inning but UWG tightened things up by tallying three runs in the bottom half, making it a 15-13 game. Reinhardt concluded the scoring with an insurance run in the ninth inning.
The Eagles had 15 hits and West Georgia 17. Each team committed two errors.
At the plate for Reinhardt, Daniel Jape (Woodstock, Ga.) went 3-for-5 with a home run and four RBIs while Jarrod Willis (Douglasville, Ga.) also had three hits in five at-bats with a double, walk, three RBIs and three runs scored. Michael Willis (Douglasville, Ga.) was 2-for-4 with a homer, walk and pair of runs scored while Greg Ihlenburg (Canton, Ga.) finished 2-for-4 with a double, two bases on balls, two RBIs and two runs scored. Jay Proffit (Marietta, Ga.) ended 2-for-5 with a home run and two runs scored while freshman Harry Nutter (Jonesboro, Ga.) singled, walked, drove in two runs and scored twice. Daniel Hester (Atlanta, Ga.) had a hit and two RBIs while Joe Niehoff (St. Cloud, Minn.) added a single and scored two runs. Chad Hiddleson (Marietta, Ga.) chipped in by scoring a couple of times.
The Eagles’ Brian Wallace (Douglasville, Ga.) was the winning pitcher in relief, going 4⅓ innings with three strikeouts. Hester got a save by tossing the final two innings, striking out three batters and not allowing a hit, run or walk.
Reinhardt moves to 18-13 overall while the Wolves slip to 20-7.
The Eagles are slated to host a Southern States Athletic Conference game on Friday vs. the Lee University Flames, who are 31-1 overall and ranked No. 3 nationally in the NAIA. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
