WALESKA, Ga. – On Thursday night, the Reinhardt College men’s basketball squad continued its late-season run with its third straight win, a 76-69 victory over the Shorter College Hawks in a Southern States Athletic Conference game at the James & Sis Brown Athletic Center. Reinhardt’s win avenged an 87-64 loss at Shorter in Rome, Ga., on Feb. 17.
There were 12 lead changes and six ties in a back-and-forth first half. The Hawks jumped ahead 35-34 at halftime but the Eagles scored the first basket of the second half and never trailed again in winning by the seven-point margin.
Reinhardt shot 44.3 percent (27-of-61) from the field – making 12 three-pointers – compared to 35.0 percent (21-of-60) for Shorter. The Hawks were 24-of-39 (61.5 percent) from the free throw line while the Eagles ended 10-of-14 (71.4 percent). The hosts won the battle of the boards 48-36.
Aaron Darling (Shady Shores, Texas) had 12 points for the winners while Kyle Bishop (Canton, Ga.) contributed 11 points in eight minutes off the bench. All-SSAC candidate Victor Stowes (Lithonia, Ga.) finished with 10 points, 10 rebounds and three assists – including two thunderous dunks in the final minute – while Adam Darling (Shady Shores, Texas) tossed in 10 points. Donovan McMullen (Riverdale, Ga.) added nine points, six boards and a game-high four blocked shots.
Reinhardt improves to 7-22 overall and 5-12 in SSAC play (tied for seventh place) while Shorter drops to 18-10 overall, including 9-8 in the conference (fifth). The Eagles will host the Berry College Vikings in an SSAC contest on Saturday at 4 p.m. in their regular season finale, which is also Senior Day. Reinhardt is currently tied with both Emmanuel College and Southern Wesleyan University in the conference standings for the final two seeds (Nos. 7 and 8) in next week’s SSAC Tournament at Lee University in Cleveland, Tenn.
