ROME, Ga. -- On the road for the first time this season, the Reinhardt University baseball team dropped both games of a non-conference doubleheader to the Shorter University Hawks on Tuesday afternoon. Reinhardt lost the first game 9-2, followed by a 13-0 setback in the second at the Robert H. Ledbetter Baseball Complex.
In the opening contest, Shorter scored two times in the bottom of the first inning before Reinhardt came back with a run in the second. The Hawks upped their lead to 4-1 with two runs in the bottom of the second inning before the Eagles scored once in the fourth, making it a 4-2 game. Shorter answered with a run in each of the fourth and fifth innings, and pulled away with a three-run sixth.
Reinhardt was outhit 11-4 and made five errors to none for the hosts. The Hawks stole six bases to the Eagles' two. Shorter left seven runners on base and Reinhardt four.
Phillip Bates was 1-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored for the Eagles while Tyler Adams finished 1-for-3 with an RBI. Tucker Adams and Jean Gonzalez also each went 1-for-3.
Taylor Smith got the start on the mound for Reinhardt and took the loss after going 4 2/3 innings. Freshmen Brett Clayton, Jay Felger and Kris Kelleher all pitched in relief while seeing their first action of the season.
The Hawks raced out to a quick 5-0 advantage after one inning of the second game and never looked back. Shorter added a run in the third inning, three runs in the fourth and four more in the fifth.
The Hawks ended with 12 hits to the Eagles' three and there were no errors in the contest. Shorter stole three bases and Reinhardt none. The guests stranded six base runners and Shorter five.
At the plate for the Eagles, Collins Wold went 1-for-2 with a walk while Bates and Josh Wilson each had a hit in three at-bats.
Reinhardt used seven pitchers in the game. Cory Cox started and suffered the loss after recording a pair of strikeouts. Matt Hartwell tossed 2 1/3 innings and did not allow a walk while freshman Zach Cagle went 2/3 inning with a strikeout and no bases on balls. CJ Oliva, Trent Sheffield and freshman Tyler Patterson pitched in relief before Jake Waters threw a perfect sixth inning.
The Eagles slip to 3-8 overall while the Hawks are 10-5. Reinhardt hosts a non-conference contest with the University of Saint Francis (Ind.) Cougars this Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Ken White Baseball Field.
