LONDON, Ky. -- The Reinhardt University men's and women's golf teams began their 2010-11 seasons on Thursday at the Bill Sergent Invitational, hosted by the University of the Cumberlands. The two-day, 36-hole event concluded with 18 holes on Friday at the par-72 Crooked Creek Golf Club.
In men's play, Reinhardt -- the defending Appalachian Athletic Conference champion and a participant in the NAIA National Championship event this past May -- finished in seventh place among 13 teams. The Eagles shot 304 the opening day and were tied for fourth before dropping after a final-round 310 for a 614 total on the 7007-yard layout. Lee University, ranked 13th nationally in last year's final NAIA poll, won the event with 297-287--584 (+8), followed by Lindsey Wilson College at 306-286--592. Host Cumberlands, which ended tied for 16th place at last spring's NAIA National Championship, was third with 299-299--598, followed by Campbellsville University (307-298--605) and Marian University (303-306--609), another squad that advanced to the 2010 NAIA nationals.
For Reinhardt, Zach Lindsey led the way by firing a 4-over-par 146 (73-73), just three strokes back of the winning score and tying for eighth place in the 78-player field. Freshman Austin Ujhelyi, playing as an individual and not counted in the team scoring, tied for 25th with 75-77--152 while Justin Osborne shot 75-80--155, tying for 36th. Rudi Lee, Dan Merriman and Chris Cartwright also competed for the Eagles.
In the women's competition, Reinhardt had three players take part, not enough for a team score. Ten squads participated on the 6072-yard course with Lindsey Wilson, which finished in sixth place at last season's NAIA national event, claiming the championship with 311-313--624. Campbellsville came in second at 326-326--652 and Cumberlands, rated No. 18 in last year's final NAIA poll, was third with 330-332--662.
Megan Lane paced the Lady Eagles with 91-103--194 for 40th place among 59 golfers. Freshmen Makenzie Bruce and Danielle Phillips played in their first collegiate tournaments for Reinhardt.
Both Reinhardt programs are slated to be a part of the Montreat College Fall Invitational at Glen Cannon Country Club in Brevard, N.C., on Sept. 13-14.
