ATLANTA -- On Wednesday afternoon, the Reinhardt University men's soccer team kicked off its 2010 season with a 1-1 tie on the road to the NCAA Division III Oglethorpe University Stormy Petrels in a non-conference game at Salamone Field.
After a scoreless first half in which Oglethorpe outshot Reinhardt 5-4, the Eagles took a 1-0 lead at the 55:41 mark when Mark Withers scored a goal off an assist from Robert Roddie. Exactly 15 minutes later (70:41), the Stormy Petrels knotted the score and the two teams settled for a tie after 90 minutes of play.
The hosts ended with 10 shots, including five on goal, while Reinhardt took nine with two being on goal. Oglethorpe earned six corner kicks, compared to five for the guests.
Zack Schultze played all 90 minutes in goal for the Eagles. He was credited with four saves.
Reinhardt and the Stormy Petrels are both 0-0-1 on the young season. The Eagles play the Tennessee Temple University Crusaders in their home opener on Monday at 3 p.m. The men's match follows the women's contest between Tennessee Temple and Reinhardt, which is set for 1 p.m. at Ken White Soccer Field.
