LEBANON, Tenn. -- The Reinhardt University volleyball squad posted two more wins on Saturday, claiming the Cumberland Volleydawg Classic co-championship with a perfect 4-0 record over the two-day event. Reinhardt began the day by beating the Faulkner University Eagles (from Montgomery, Ala.) by the score of 3-1 (24-26, 25-15, 25-15, 25-15) before finishing with a 3-0 victory (25-23, 25-17, 25-22) over the Mountain State University Lady Cougars (out of Beckley, W.Va.). Cumberland University, the alma mater of Lady Eagles first-year head coach Jenny Hayes, hosted the six-team event at Dallas Floyd Recreation Center and also went 4-0 for a share of the title.
"We were just really scrappy," Hayes said. "There are still a lot of things we need to work on, but we played well. Everyone played their position well."
Against Faulkner, Reinhardt ended with a .165 attack percentage (38 kills and 18 errors in 121 attempts) while the Eagles were at .000 (32 kills and 32 errors in 128 attacks). The winners collected 14 service aces and seven total team blocks, compared to seven and four, respectively, for Faulkner.
Sami Lane paced Reinhardt with a match-high 18 kills, a .341 attack percentage and seven digs while Candace Turcotte provided eight kills, four service aces and a match-best three block assists. Tori O'Brien served a match-high five aces while Isa Costa came up with 14 assists and nine digs. Courtney Byrd tallied 13 assists and eight digs while Ashley Robinson contributed 14 digs. SaVanna Strickland added two solo blocks and a pair of block assists.
In the Lady Eagles' final match, they had 10 service aces to Mountain State's two. Reinhardt edged the Lady Cougars in attack percentage (.158 to .143) and kills (39-35).
For the Lady Eagles, Lane produced a match-high 10 kills and nine digs while O'Brien posted eight kills and a match-best 10 service aces. Robinson had a match-best 22 digs and Byrd a match-high 16 assists.
Reinhardt improves to 4-0 overall while Faulkner is 3-1 and MSU 2-3. The Lady Eagles host the NCAA Division III Wesleyan College Pioneers on Wednesday at 7 p.m. inside the James & Sis Brown Athletic Center.
